· Marla's Musings

With all the gel casting, pinning, and air drying, daily washing was too much. I needed to find another way to get that clean, just-washed feeling and smell that I loved every morning. The ingredients in most commercial dry shampoos is appalling and the organic ones are crazy expensive. So, I experimented with creating several different versions of homemade dry shampoos and came up with a recipe that I absolutely LOVE!

Turns out it’s even better than my old wet shampoo ways! Now I only co-wash every 3 days. After that time, my curls are not so great- more like waves and I mentally need to wet my hair. Time between washings may get longer as my scalp, hair, and mentality improve.

What makes it awesome:

  • absorbs oil without being too harsh and drying
  • adds volume
  • gives an instant lift to my roots
  • smells amazing
  •  a big time saver and simplifies my life
  •  portable and easy to use everywhere – great for busy mornings, after the gym, camping, travel, you get the idea...
  •  all natural
  •  cheap!!!

What’s in it and why?

  • arrowroot powder – light, soft, and absorbent – all of which helps it absorb excess oil and leave hair feeling silky soft
  • colloidal oatmeal – relieves irritation, calms itchy scalps, moisturizes (humectant that pulls moisture from air), helps thicken and strengthen hair, and works to help make hair less brittle and more elastic. Colloidal oatmeal is manufactured with the bran intact as it contains the important skin soothing properties of polyphenols called Avenanthramides. Avenanthramides, which work like an antihistamine, reduce redness and itchiness when the skin is irritated.
  • Moroccan Ghassoul clay or kaolin clay . Ghassoul is an excellent fortifier for the scalp and hair by reducing the secretion of sebum.  It can also be used as a hair clarifying mask as needed.

note: Ghassoul clay is a little dark but should be great for all colors of hair. If your hair is extremely light, you may wish to go with kaolin clay.

  • cocoa powder – (optional) use to darken dry shampoo when making for brunettes and redheads
  • Clary Sage essential oil –contains linalyl acetate that makes it effective in increasing hair growth. It can improve hair strength, in addition to increasing hair growth, making hair more difficult to break.
  • Bergamot essential oil – smells great!  stimulates your scalp, energizes your mind, and helps wake you up.  Plus, one study has found it to have antimicrobial activity when applied to the scalp.
Mix the following together and store in a glass jar (I found mine at World Market):

6 tablespoons arrowroot powder

2 tablespoons colloidal oatmeal

1 tablespoon clay

1 tablespoon cocoa powder (omit for light hair)

20 drops dōTERRA Clary Sage essential oil

20 drops dōTERRA Bergamot essential oil

How to use my dry shampoo:
  • apply dry shampoo with a poofy makeup brush
  • tap off the excess from the makeup brush (a little goes a long way)
  • apply to your roots and the oily parts of your hair
  • lightly massage into hair with your fingertips so as to not disturb the curls and cause frizz
  • Voila!  It’s like an amazingly scented grease eraser for your hair
